Eligibility and Pre-Requisites
Although anyone can participate in the IJona classes, the PMP exam has specific criteria requiring:
- A payment – the exam costs $405 for PMI members and $555 for non-members
- Formal PM Training – the exam requires completion of formal Project Management training. PMI calls these Contact Hours, and these are completed by participating in our classes.
- Experience leading and directing projects. This experience is about 2 to 3 ½ years’ worth of Project Management, based on education. This experience does not require one to hold the job title Project Manager or even be the designated Project Manager – one merely needs to have performed the work.

The Project Management Professional (PMP) credential is one of the world’s leading certificates in Project Management. It represents someone with enough experience and knowledge to be a manager, leader, and problem solver for projects – controlling change. In order to qualify for the exam, you must have formal training and some experience managing the project. You don’t need the job title “Project Manager”, and you don’t need to have been an assigned Project Manager. You do have to be able to demonstrate you did the work leading and directing projects.
The Project Management Institute (PMI) is a non-profit organization that owns the PMP exam, the certificate, and the standard, which the PMP exam is greatly based on. The organization became an organization in 1969, and by 1984 the credential was publicly available.
Professional Development Units, or PDUs are hours invested in continued training and refinement after you receive your certificate. The PMP only lasts 3 years; if you want to re-certify without taking the test again (you can do this), collect 20 PDUs per year (60 for three years) and submit them for acceptance. These can be writing white papers, lecturing, training, volunteering and continued Project Management. Currently, you are required to have a balance of these hours across technical Project Management (schedule, cost, scope, quality, risk management and so forth), business and business knowledge, and leadership and management.
The exam is a little different than most. It’s multiple-choice, and all the questions are random, established when you sit down. You go to a test center to take it. You have 4 hours to finish 200 questions – that means you have 1.2 minutes to solve the problem for each question. The questions don’t just test your knowledge; they require you use that knowledge to solve problem after problem. If you take a break, the timer still runs – so you are constantly in a state of urgency. That’s the exam – it’s like being a manger. You are moving from issue to issue, constantly solving problems, prioritizing, selecting the best option, sometimes with a lot of good options, and sometimes with no good options.
PMI performs surveys constantly and asks just this question. It not only establishes a higher compensation, but generally holding a PMP increases your salary about 23% over someone who doesn’t have one. Other metrics, such as country of employment, number of years of experience, role and position, and project size impact this, but that 23% is a demonstratable standard anywhere. For instance, in India, the difference between an average non-PMP and PMP salary was found to be about a 36% increase. In the United States, the difference is about 25%.
Anyone who is looking at Project Management as a profession or are considering Project Management as the focus of their job, should consider the credential. It not only demonstrates a reliable approach to Project Management but establishes a certain level of capability that has marketability.
In many countries including the United States, companies use the PMP as an initial screening to grant interviews. Beyond this, earning the credential exposes one to the standard good practice approach to managing processes across the entire project, across the entire spectrum of required skills. If you start preparing for the exam and haven’t had extensive experience in Risk Management, by the time you will have prepared for and taken the exam, you should have had enough training in Risk and Risk management that would allow you to perform it well on the exam.
Online classroom training or Live Virtual Classwork provides a classroom and an instructor capable of teaching you and peers from anywhere in the world. With today’s tools the experience is just as impactful as being in a class, with the ability to ask questions, share files, and participate in a class in the same manner as if one were in a real classroom – often with better tools than available in a traditional setting. Imagine being able to work with the trainer on a file, have the trainer highlight and notate the file, and then be able to receive a copy of that file and have multiple versions – just the question, the question with its answers, then with the valuable highlights and comments. Like a classroom discussion can get very lively, but also like a classroom, trainers experienced with online training are able to demonstrate leadership and management to focus energy on the topics, concepts and discussions at hand. Now consider this – can you get a recording of your traditional classroom experience in 8 to 12 hours? With online classroom training, this is considered a standard behavior.
The technical process may vary from online tool to online tool, but generally, your course dashboard may have a central location to download the recordings, once they’re available (within a few hours of the end of the class). In some instances, you may receive a link to the recording in an email.
The exam fee is separate from the training fee. However, PMI provides discounts, and trainers will provide recommendations that not only minimize the exam fee but provide one free access to certain necessary preparation material.
You will receive a completion certificate that demonstrates you have completed the 35 hours formal Project Management training (‘contact hours’) required to apply to sit for the exam.
You will receive the training material, which includes review material, exercises, quizzes, and practice questions that assist you in preparing. You will be provided recordings from the session, with options to receive notes, examples, other artifacts that may be created in the classes. You also receive ongoing access to PMP trainers through our community forum.
Our classes are generally 3 hours per day or 4 hours per day, and last about 9 to 12 days. There are options for taking classes during weekdays and weekends.
Many of our trainers and support team are capable of reviewing your application for completion, as well as providing application support.
The exam requires certain training and experience, and you will capture this information in an application submitted to PMI. Once accepted, you will pay for your exam, and then when you are ready, you schedule your exam. Details are provided in and throughout the training, as are support.
